ABOUT THE STUDENT COALITION FOR REFUGEES
Inspiring Change
The Student Coalition for Refugees is an interstate, intercollegiate network of student groups focused on refugee and immigrant advocacy. We originally began as 'The Student Coalition for Human Rights,' a network that connected human-rights-focused student groups at the University of Connecticut in order to streamline communication and maximize the impact of student activism on the university's campus. The Coalition was an instant success at the University, prompting Coalition leadership to consider the possibility of expansion. Our founder, Irene Soteriou, focuses on advocacy specifically related to preventing armed conflict and supporting survivors of such conflict. She had encountered a lack of communication and collaboration between groups within the sphere of refugee advocacy, and felt that this served as a severe inhibitor to the field's success. Organization leadership therefore voted to transition the Student Coalition for Human Rights into the Student Coalition for Refugees (SCfR), a network modeled off of the original structure but with a more specialized focus. Since our transition, we have been able to start a new chapter of more targeted activism, supporting local businesses and creating long-lasting partnerships within and between our communities. We have expanded from our base in Connecticut to now span across numerous states, including Massachusetts and California. Student groups from across the country utilize the SCfR network to share volunteer postings, promote upcoming events, draw attention to relevant resources, and pass along important information. If you or your student organization are interested in joining the SCfR network, send us an email at thescfr@gmail.com.
